Multi-Sectoral Initiatives

Multi-Sectoral initiative

THE LAB STAGE PER SE KICKED OFF WITH THE LAB TEAM CONSTRUCTING A SYSTEMIC MAP OF THE FASHION INDUSTRY IN BRAZIL. THIS WAS LATER COMBINED WITH DIVERSE, INDIVIDUAL SYSTEM PERSPECTIVES TO CREATE A SHARED UNDERSTANDING.

System map identifying challenges

THE MAP USES THE STRUCTURE OF AN ICEBERG. IT TRIES TO IDENTIFY WHAT IS BELOW WATER LEVEL, SUCH AS PATTERNS, STRUCTURES AND MENTAL MODELS, WHEREAS EVENTS ARE THE ONLY ELEMENTS ABOVE WATER LEVEL AND WHICH ARE, THEREFORE, VISIBLE.

The more we are able to understand the elements that lie below the surface, the higher the possibility of influencing and transforming a system. The map was then used to identify the main challenges that must be overcome to establish a fair and sustainable fashion industry:

:: Education, professional training, science and technology
:: Culture and consumerism
:: Product life cycle, intensive resource use and toxicity
:: Labor: working conditions, informal employment and migration; inequality of social status, ethnicity and gender
:: Business model, relationships within the fashion chain
:: Public Policies

Prototyping solutions

TO ADDRESS AND ADVANCE A COMPLEX SOCIAL CHALLENGE, WE NEED SOLUTIONS THAT ARE SYSTEMIC, COLLABORATIVE AND EXPERIMENTAL, WHICH WORK NOT ONLY ON THE LEVEL OF INITIATIVES, BUT ALSO ON THE LEVEL OF THE SYSTEM ITSELF AND ITS CONDITIONS.

A Social Lab involves cycles of prototyping in which initiatives are designed, tested in the real world, and feedback and learning are integrated. The Lab Team was organized in six Working Groups (WGs) that co-created and tested six multisectoral initiatives.

Testimonials

“We cannot lose our focus on systemic change – specific projects for short- and medium-term implementation have value, but the Lab with its resources, partners and power of influence has the potential to act on systemic leverage points to fully transform the industry”.
